There
are over a dozen types of corrosion that we encounter in the marine
environment. The most dangerous of which is stray current corrosion
(often referred to as "electrolysis"). Stray current
can cause irreparable damage to a boat's underwater running gear in
months or weeks. Even
if a boat is properly wired, severe corrosion can occur when plugged
into a "hot" marina, where
poorly wired vessels cause stray current to flow to neighboring vessels
that share the same
shorepower system.
Brian Donnalley is ABYC trained in metal corrosion and corrosion surveys.
By utilizing a
silver/silver chloride half-cell and digital multi-meter, problems can
be traced via the voltage
potentials that cause accelerated corrosion. If a problem is detected,
Brian can consult with
your electrical technician or contractor to remedy the situation.
